Kelly Clarkson - Tell Me A Lie

A suivre...

Chinese Taste for Luxury Keeps Tourism Out of Red

THE new face of Australian tourism is from Beijing not Birmingham and prefers designer handbags to well-worn rucksacks.

As the numbers of sunburnt British backpackers arriving on shoestring budgets begins to wane, cashed-up Chinese tourists with long shopping lists are emerging as the most important players for inbound tourism.

In the three months to March, 188,600 visitors came here from Britain, a fall of 11.7 per cent compared with the same period last year. Visitors from China rose by 23.2 per cent, by far the largest increase, with 179,500 arriving during the same three months.

The influx was partly driven by Chinese New Year. Last year the value of the Chinese market exceeded $3 billion for the first time, according to Tourism Australia. On average, Chinese visitors spend $6803. Visitors aged 15 to 29 stay an average of 112 nights and spend twice as long and twice as much as British tourists of the same age.

The traditional attractions - beaches, wildlife and open spaces - are a drawcard for Chinese travellers but so is shopping, which explains the popularity of Melbourne and Sydney.

Chinese tourists are drawn to upmarket shops such as J. Farren-Price in Sydney, which sells diamonds, Rolex watches and Kailis pearls.

''In the last two years there has been a significant increase in Chinese tourists, who have an appetite for fine, globally recognised brands,'' the director, Julian Farren-Price, said. ''We are very good value for them because they have high taxes on their luxury goods.''

Vivienne Zhang, 27, agrees it is cheaper for Chinese people to buy high-end products in Australia. ''Shopping is a very important activity on their travel agenda,'' said Ms Zhang, who came to Australia from Fujian in China on a student visa seven years ago and now has permanent residency. ''A $200 designer bag bought here could cost twice as much in China,'' she said.

The Mulberry handbag shop in central Sydney is another favourite destination.

''We get many Chinese tourists, usually buying a bag for themselves before they return home,'' said a sales assistant, Georgia Milone. ''Most popular at the moment is our Alexa Chung, which is $1810.''

Less than 10 per cent of the Chinese population can be considered wealthy but with a population of more than 1.3 billion, that still left 130 million people with enough cash to travel and shop, said Sam Huang, a senior lecturer in tourism management at the University of South Australia.

''They want to return home from overseas trips with luxury goods as a symbol of their wealth,'' he said.

Mr Huang estimates that by 2020 the number of Chinese visitors could exceed those from Britain and New Zealand.

The executive president of Tourism Australia, Andrew McEvoy, said the boom in Chinese tourism had been carefully cultivated.

''Everyone says this increase in tourism is just happening now, but we have been investing since the mid-to-late '90s, and in 1999 Australia was the first Western country to be granted approved destination status by the Chinese government. We've been building on our relationship with China since then.''

Last July the government said it would spend $30 million over three years to attract Chinese visitors.

Next week the Tourism Minister, Martin Ferguson, will launch the 2020 China Strategic Plan at the China-Australia Tourism Summit in Cairns.

Lady Gaga's Exclusive Sydney Gig

FEWER than 1000 fans will get to see Lady Gaga's one-off Sydney show on July 13. The Poker Face singer is scheduled for a flying visit to promote her new album, Born This Way, and it will be her only performance this time around. She has booked the Sydney Town Hall for the gig and plans to rename it the Sydney Monster Hall for the occasion. Competitions for tickets will begin on FM radio stations this week.

Those running Take 40 programs, Vodafone, the Today network and Channel [V] are all offering tickets. The star is also giving fans across the country a shot at tickets as long as they prove their dedication - from June 8, a Facebook page will be set up to accept pictures of the most extravagant ''little monsters'' out there.

The concert, set to be hosted by 2Day FM's Kyle and Jackie O, will feature a stripped-down production of Lady Gaga's usual touring extravagance. But for a singer who entered the Grammy Awards presentation in a giant egg and emerged from coffin at a recent British performance, fans are likely to expect nothing short of spectacular.

Lady Gaga has not ruled out returning for a full Australian tour and has been quoted saying she will be back early next year for what she has dubbed the Born This Way Ball. Her previous Australia tour was in March last year.

[CLIP] Jason Derülo - Don't Wanna Go Home

Elisa Tovati & Tom Dice - Il Nous Faut

More Race Week celebrity appearances

We've gotten info on all kinds of Race Week-related activities taking place over the next few days. Here are three noteworthy happenings that caught our eyes:

1. As part of Food Lion Speed Street, Matt Kenseth and his No. 17 Jeremiah Weed Ford will make an appearance at the festival at 4:30 p.m. Friday ... but the Sprint Cup Series Champion won't be using horsepower to get around. Instead, strongman Rendy DeLaCruz will attempt to pull Kenseth -- who will be sitting behind the wheel of his car -- 100 feet in 60 seconds or less. For every foot DeLaCruz successfully pulls the 3,500-pound stock car, Jeremiah Weed will distribute up to 500 $10 taxi vouchers redeemable throughout the weekend with Charlotte's Crown Cab (the idea being the company will get 21-and-older fans who are making a party out of the race home safely). Comedian Adam Carolla will emcee Friday's stock-car pull, which will begin midway between Stonewall Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and end at the corners of MLK and Brevard Street.

2. Race fans can meet Robby Gordon -- regarded as one of the best road course drivers in NASCAR -- and get a glimpse of what it's like to be a driver or a pit crew member from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the center court in Gastonia's Westfield Eastridge mall. The "Rev It Up" event will feature Gordon (who will bring his car, sign autographs and greet fans at about 4 p.m.), as well as NASCAR's development team from Revolution Racing, the stars of BET's "Changing Lanes." Meanwhile, kids and adults can get behind the wheel of a racing simulator or try the Pit Stop Challenge, loosening lugnuts with a spring-loaded air gun that's identical to what NASCAR teams use. Many of the mall's retailers will offer discounts during the event, up to $50 or 50 percent off. The first 100 customers who spend $150 at the mall will also receive a $10 Westfield Gift Card.

3. Grammy Award-winning artist Darius Rucker will perform the national anthem for the 52nd running of the Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Born in Charleston, S.C., Rucker first gained fame as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of the band Hootie & the Blowfish, which he founded in 1986 at the University of South Carolina. Hootie & the Blowfish received the Best New Artist award at the 1996 Grammy Awards. In 2008, Rucker announced that he would pursue a solo career as a country music performer; he received the Top New Artist title from the Country Music Association Awards in 2009. Tickets for Sunday's race can be purchased at www.charlottemotorspeedway.com or by calling 1-800-455-FANS (3267).

[CLIP] All Time Low - I Feel Like Dancin'

Sydney To Host World Premiere Of Strictly Ballroom - The Musical

Sydney NSW Australia (Top40 Charts/ Events New South Wales) Baz Luhrmann and NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell have today announced that the stage musical of the iconic Australian film Strictly Ballroom will have its world premiere and first run in Sydney at the Lyric Theatre from September 2013.

"Today I'm very pleased to announce Baz Luhrmann and producers Carmen Pavlovic and Gerry Ryan of Global Creatures have chosen Sydney over London and New York for the world premiere of the much anticipated, Strictly Ballroom the musical," Mr. O'Farrell said.

A worldwide cinema hit, Strictly Ballroom re-ignited interest in ballroom dancing both in Australia and internationally.

"Producers in London and New York have been pursuing the rights for Strictly Ballroom for many years. It is a major theatrical coup that Sydney has secured the premiere ahead of Broadway and the West End," he said.

"Securing the Strictly Ballroom premiere demonstrates Sydney's re-emergence as the number one city for first run musicals in Australia," he continued.

Cobra Starship & Sabi - You Make Me Feel...

Les américains Cobra Starship, qu'on avait adoré il y a deux ans avec Leighton Meester sur Good Girls Go Bad, sont de retour ! Prélude à leur quatrième album "Night Shades", voici You Make Me Feel.

Chris Tucker bringing standup act to town

After a brief hiatus from the stage, Chris Tucker is returning with a live comedy tour scheduled to make a stop at Time Warner Cable Arena on Saturday, July 9.

Tucker -- who become a global movie star thanks to the three "Rush Hour" films -- is often regarded as one of the funniest comics in the industry, known for his unique voice, fast-paced humor, and animated facial expressions.

Tickets ($45.75-$59.75) go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, May 27 at timewarnercablearena.com, ticketmaster.com, the arena box office, Ticketmaster outlets, or via charge-by-phone (800-745-3000).

Taio Cruz - Troublemaker

The Addams Family to Premiere In Sydney

Minister for Major Events, George Souris, today announced that The Addams Family, Broadway’s Smash Hit Musical Comedy, will make its Australian premiere in Sydney in March 2013 at the Capitol Theatre.

Minister Souris said securing The Addams Family premiere demonstrates Sydney’s re-emergence as the number one city for first run musicals.

“As the preferred location to open this world-class musical in Australia, this is a clear vote of confidence by the producers in Sydney as a major events destination,” Mr Souris said.

The Addams Family opened at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in March 2010 and immediately became one of Broadway’s biggest hits. In fourteen months the show has grossed over US$62 million and is consistently among Broadway’s top grossing shows each week.

Minister Souris said pursuing major events is key to rebuilding the NSW economy, a strategy that includes Sydney attracting the finest in musical theatre.

“We are seeing producers embrace our city for their shows which are once again becoming an essential part of the Sydney visitor experience.

“Bringing these musicals to life requires a joint effort and we are working harder than ever with Sydney theatre owners and the City of Sydney to further improve our standing in this area,” he said.

Events NSW estimates that internationally renowned musicals can generate around $3 million per month in new money for the State or almost $20 million in direct economic impact over a 6 month run.

The Addams Family Australian Producer, Rodney Rigby, said the show would bring audiences from across Australia and New Zealand to Sydney, with the Harbour City the obvious choice for the premiere.

“When I saw The Addams Family on Broadway, I knew that Sydney was the perfect city for its Australian premiere, so much so that the Capitol Theatre could have been designed by Charles Addams himself,” Mr Rigby said.

Minister Souris has long advocated that Sydney, as Australia’s global city, must have world class entertainment for locals and visitors on the NSW events calendar, in order to fill our hotels and boost our tourism industry.

“We look forward to working with producers Rodney Rigby together and Stuart Oken to put on a long and successful run for this great show.

“This is the start of a new run of musicals for Sydney and NSW. In addition to the recent and highly successful Doctor Zhivago, Sydney will also host the premiere of Legally Blonde in June 2012.

“These premieres will add to a diverse range of world-class productions already showing in Sydney, including Mary Poppins and Jersey Boys.

“The Government will be making more major announcements in the very near future on major first run musicals to premiere in Sydney,” he said.

Julie Roberts’ video debuts at Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend

Country singer and Lancaster, S.C. native Julie Roberts is set to debut her "NASCAR Party" anthem at the All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway this Saturday, May 21.

Julie, known for hits "Break Down Here," "Men and Mascara," and "Wake Up Older,” has been working on this project closely with NASCAR, who also produced the video.  The video, shot at both the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth and the Charlotte Motor Speedway, will debut on the world’s largest screen – also being unveiled for the first time that day at the track.  Julie’s “NASCAR Party” face will be seen in high-definition using 9 million LED bulbs across 200 feet wide by 80 feet tall.

"It's been so much fun working with NASCAR on the song and video for 'NASCAR Party'!"  Julie shares her enthusiasm exclaiming, "I am so excited for NASCAR fans to see it on the big screen at the All-Star Race in Charlotte and I'm ready to share it with NASCAR fans all over the world!!!"

Julie will be on the judges’ panel for this year’s Penzoil Ultra Victory Challenge which has NASCAR’s top drivers competing in a smoky burnout contest.  Taking part in this pre-race tradition is last year’s winner Joey Logano, Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer, Brad Keselowski, Kasey Kahne, and 2011 Daytona 500 champion Trevor Bayne – all set to duke it out to win $10,000 for their respective charities.

In addition to all this, Julie will be treating race-goers to a full concert along the speedway’s frontstretch following the completion of the race.

Dierks Bently will perform a pre-race concert in the infield.

Tickets for all May races at Charlotte Motor Speedway can be purchased online at www.charlottemotorspeedway.com or by calling the speedway ticket office at 1-800-455-FANS (3267).

[CLIP] Beyoncé - Run The World (Girls)

Run The World (Girls), le nouveau single de Beyoncé, connaît des débuts laborieux.

Pesky wabbit is music to conductor's ears

Conductor George Daugherty and his right-hand rabbit, Bugs Bunny, are back in Charlotte this week with “Warner Bros. Presents Bugs Bunny at the Symphony,” a concert with the Charlotte Symphony Pops that combines classic cartoons with classical music. It’s a sequel to his popular “Bugs Bunny on Broadway,” which was performed in Charlotte in 2009.

We caught up with him by phone Wednesday to discuss the sequel.

Q. So, what’s up with this show, Doc?

The sequel is about 50 or 60 percent new. It still has some of the old classics from the original, like “What’s Opera, Doc?” and “The Rabbit of Seville” and “Long Haired Hare,” but (now) Tweety’s in the concert (and we’ve added) “Tom & Jerry in the Hollywood Bowl,” which is great classic cartoon set to “Die Fledermaus” – along with the Flintstones and Scooby-Doo.

Q. Nice to change things up, huh?

Yeah, well, after 20 years of doing the same exact concert, it’s fun for me to have some new material.

Q. Any other animated characters you’d like to work with in the future?

I’ve always wanted to do Disney’s “Sleeping Beauty” as a film and orchestra concert. … I am very happy with the Looney Tunes gang and Warner Bros., so I’m kind of sticking where I am. But that’s always been one of my favorites. It was based on Tchaikovsky’s ballet score, and I was a ballet conductor for a million years before I was a cartoon conductor.

Q. Did you ever imagine when you started out that cartoons would be your livelihood?

I do do other things, and I still conduct, quote, regular concerts, unquote. But thanks to (Bugs Bunny), I’ve conducted at the Hollywood Bowl, the Sydney Opera House, on Broadway, at the Royal Festival Hall in London, and for the Royal Family. I’ve conducted with arguably the greatest orchestras in the world. I’m not sure that would’ve happened in my career without this. …

It’s a project that is very, very near and dear to my heart in that we bring a lot of people into the symphony orchestra that don’t otherwise come. So I have no regrets. I’m very happy with what I’m doing. And Bugs is a very good colleague. He never changes tempos on me night after night like human soloists do.

Q. After Bugs, who’s your second-favorite character to work with?

You gotta love Elmer and you have to love Daffy. Both of them are such classic characters. And the Coyote. (Looney Tunes director) Chuck Jones always used to say to me, “We all go to bed looking in the mirror and thinking we’re Bugs Bunny, but we all wake up and look in the mirror and discover we’re either Daffy Duck or the Coyote.” The Coyote especially. How many of us keep doing the same thing over and over again? We get an anvil dropped on our head, but we do it again.

Q. Do you ever get tired of being associated with cartoons?

I really don’t. I don’t mean to be sounding all sugarcoated, but it really is so brilliantly done. I never would have been able to stick with this for all these years if this stuff was schlock. … I’ve done plenty of other things in my life where I just think I can’t stand it for another minute, and – I won’t say what those are but – but not this. “What’s up, Doc?” is music to my ears. Still.

[CLIP] Simple Plan & Marie-Mai - Jet Lag

New Discovery Place exhibit opens May 25

"LIFE: A Journey Through Time" -- a new photography exhibition called set to open at Discovery Place Wednesday, May 25 -- will showcase "the transformation of Earth and its natural phenomena ... from its earliest beginnings to its present diversity."

The exhibition is an original multimedia presentation that blends art, science, and the imagery of acclaimed National Geographic wildlife photographer Frans Lanting, who for seven years (beginning in 2000) traveled the world "on a mission to spotlight new scientific insights and the history of life forms."

His destinations included some of the most desolate and rugged areas of the globe, including Siberia’s Kamchatka Peninsula and remote Western Australia, where life-forms 3 billion years old still dominate the landscape.

The exhibition organizes 64 large-format photographs in terms of five basic elements that Lanting says make up the universe: earth, water, fire, air and space. His images include giant tortoises, prehistoric trilobites, delicate jellies, spiny octopus trees, erupting volcanoes and shimmering coral reefs.

"The 'LIFE' exhibition is a gallery display that walks the line between science and art," said John Mackay, president and CEO of Discovery Place. "It is a beautiful celebration of the planet and its history that demonstrates the remarkable magnitude of our world's biodiversity."

"LIFE: A Journey Through Time" is on display at Discovery Place May 25 through Sept. 5, and is free with museum admission. Photography is not allowed. Details: Click here.
